Interim Updates: 2024-25 Trends

Increase in Diversified Programming

In 2018, Marching Band dominated the field, making up approximately 57% of all reported K-12 music education programming in New Orleans public schools. As music offerings have expanded, marching band now makes up about 30% of program offerings.

Choir & Vocal

31% of schools offered choir or other vocal instruction in the 2024-25 school year, a significant increase from 8% in 2018.

Strings & Orchestra

13 sites offered strings and/or orchestra instruction in the 2024-25 school year, through a combination of full-time faculty and community arts partnerships.

Music Tech & Industry

At least 8 schools have initiated Music Technology or Music Industry programs, with several having onsite recording studios.

Grades K-8 Specific Trends

There was a drop in K-8 general music instruction captured from 2018 to 2024-25 (61% to 55%), as well as a drop in concert band (from 37% to 21%). These may be due to under-reporting; we are deploying additional surveys at the K-8 level this fall.

Gathering School Music Program Information

During the 2024-2025 school year, Artist Corps New Orleans was able to gather information on school music programs in 83 of 93 school sites (89%). Each data point above was drawn from this data set, collected via school support visits, informational interviews with educators and school leaders, and formal surveys.

Note that for the purposes of this data collection, we count sites by separate school addresses. In some cases, there may be multiple sites counted at one address if a school is subdivided into separate schools on one campus.
